Abstract
Background and Objectives: Previously, we documented the usefulness of QOL in reporting the treatment results after ventilation tube insertion (VTI) in otitis media with effusion using the retrospective chart reviews and questionnaires. The purpose of this study was to verify and compare the previous results with the results from prospective follow-up.

Method: One hundred twenty-one children with otitis media were included. For the measurement of QOL, the study was performed using questionnaires including six items such as physical suffering, hearing loss, speech impairment, emotional stress, activity limitation and care-provider concerns. In prospective study, we questioned seventy-one parents on the six items preoperatively and postoperatively. In retrospective study, we questioned fifty parents postoperatively. The effect of VTI was determined by standardized response mean (SRM).

Results: The items of physical suffering, hearing loss, and care-provider concerns has large SRM in retrospective and prospective study but care-provider concerns has statistical different results in two study. Small SRM items of speech impairment, activity limitation has different results in two study.

Conclusion: Prospective study results differ from retrospective results in terms of small SRM. Prospective methods can show for more reliable results in QOL change measurements.
